A weak rule of law means that Ethiopia is ‘repressed’ for economic freedom. Civil war has had a negative impact on output, but economic development has remained resilient, largely owing to a sound agricultural sector, although inflation remains very high. With one of the largest populations in the region and solid expansion in incomes, the consumer market is attractive, but poverty and food insecurity persist. Internet use is low, but mobile subscribers are rising and 5G has been launched.
