2022 was a challenging year for Iraq’s tissue and hygiene market as high inflation and rising prices put pressure on demand, despite population growth and urbanisation. The essential nature of many of these products mean that consumers are more likely to trade down to cheaper options rather than stop buying them altogether when faced with steep price increases and this has led to demand shifting towards generic products and cheaper brands imported from Turkey and other low-cost source countries.
During 2022, Iraq’s tissue and hygiene market went through a major transformation as the long-held expectations that local players would eventually have a greater role to play in the market finally came to pass. Indeed, by the end of the year, there was a far wider range of products and brands owned and marketed by local players available across a variety of product categories and this has made a huge dent in the traditional dominance of imported brands.
After more than a year of political stasis, 2022 saw the formation of a new government and cabinet. This was a huge relief for the local population after many months of political uncertainty to country uncomfortably close to the edge of civil war.
Rapid urbanisation remains one of the most influential background trends on Iraq’s tissue and hygiene industry. There are many factors influencing and driving this urbanisation, with the shake-up of Iraq’s politics, economics and society that has followed the cessation of armed conflict creating the ideal preconditions for rapid and permanent urbanisation.
Rising logistics costs over the course of 2021 and 2022 put huge pressure on the margins of the country’s tissue and hygiene players, resulting in significant unit price increases across all categories during 2020. However, with most of the low-cost imports that dominate in most categories coming from Turkey and Iran, the depreciation seen in the exchange value of the Turkish lira and Iranian rial meant that relatively muted price increases were seen for imports from these two countries.
Tissue and hygiene is set to register a positive performance over the forecast period, with sales expected to continue benefiting from greater social and economic stability as the country continues with its rebuilding and recovery after so many years of conflict. More importantly, disposable income levels are likely to increase.
